Paragon Vision Sciences is a world leader in orthokeratology (ortho-k), specialty contact lenses and oxygen permeable contact lens materials. Located in Mesa, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix), the Paragon Vision Sciences Team is committed to providing innovative polymers and quality support to its laboratory partners and distributors around the globe and to the practitioners and consumers using Paragon Vision Sciences. Paragon Vision Sciences’ goal is to fulfill its mission to “improve lives through better vision.”
A History of Innovation
Paragon Vision Sciences has been a pioneer in the contact lens industry since its early days as Paragon Optical. In the mid-70s, soft contact lenses were in demand and Paragon Vision Sciences decided to pursue an improved material for gas permeable (GP) lenses. Determined to produce a GP material that would offer the comfort of soft contact lenses along with excellent ocular health and safety, greater durability, visual clarity, and easier care, Paragon Vision Sciences set out on a future of innovations.
In February of 1995, Paragon Vision Sciences, in collaboration with NASA, launched simultaneous experiments on earth and aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. The experiments were a comparative look at the differences between materials polymerized on earth versus materials polymerized in the near zero gravity of space. As a result, Paragon Vision Sciences researchers utilized concepts derived from the experiments to engineer a proprietary Hyperpurified Delivery System (HDS® Technology) that effectively eliminated so-called “bad” silicone from the polymer material.
By purifying the silicone, the process safely gives Paragon Vision Sciences HDS® Technology materials (Paragon HDS®, Paragon Thin™ and Paragon HDS® 100) excellent physical characteristics in terms of excellent wettability, dimensional stability, hardness and optics. Paragon HDS® and Paragon HDS® 100 are two of the few GP materials cleared by the FDA for up to seven days of continuous wear. Just another way Paragon Vision Sciences has furthered the GP industry.
As a progressive manufacturer of a full range of oxygen permeable (GP) materials used in the manufacturing of contact lenses, Paragon Vision Sciences developed Paragon CRT® Contact Lenses for use in orthokeratology. Approved by the FDA in June of 2002 for overnight wear, Paragon CRT® Contact Lenses are the preferred choice by an elite, global group of eye care practitioners to manage myopia (nearsightedness).
Orthokeratology is the process of wearing a specially designed therapeutic contact lens while sleeping, to gently reshape the cornea, providing improved vision during waking hours. The wearer has the opportunity of improved vision all day without the hassle of glasses or daytime contact lenses and without the need for surgery.
Since receiving FDA approval for Paragon CRT® Contact Lenses in 2002, Paragon Vision Sciences has sold over 1.3 million Paragon CRT® Contact Lenses worldwide. With only nine adverse events reported, all of which were resolved, this speaks volumes to Paragon CRT® Contact Lenses being a proven alternative for the management of myopia.
"Since 1971, the prevalence of nearsightedness (myopia), has increased 66% in the USA."1 I can't think of a better solution to help manage myopia than Paragon CRT® Contact Lenses. Our lenses gently reshape the cornea overnight. The lenses are removed upon awakening and the patient should have improved vision through out the day without the problems and discomfort associated with daytime contact lenses," said Pam Scoggins, Vice President of Global Marketing for Paragon Vision Sciences.
